Dispels commonly held beliefs about water birth, midwives, and vaginal birth after caesarean, birth centers and circumcision.

Boldly states that women need to be in charge of their birth experience.

Beautifully reveals the magic and mystery of birth through the experience of six women actually giving birth in the nurturing environments they chose including; standing, suatting, water birth and home birth

We’ll be meeting Monday, June 8 at 7 pm under the pavilion at Shawnee Park in Xenia. The park is located just a block north of the library. You can see it to your right as you head north on Route 68 to Yellow Springs just 2 blocks past the courthouse and downtown area.

Our topic for the month is Preparing for Birth. Just think about the special and particular things that you do to get ready for labor and birth. We will just be informally sharing our own ways to prepare for birth and hopefully learning some new things we can do to get ready for the big event. If you’ve ever had a baby, you will have valuable input for all of us on this topic. If you’ve not had a baby, this will be a great meeting to gain some wisdom from other mamas who have been there.

Many women develop problems stemming from a weak pelvic floor, so come to the free, informational Xenia Dar a Luz meeting on Monday, May 11 to learn all about your own pelvic floor and what you can do throughout pregnancy and beyond to keep it in tip-top shape. This meeting I would love to share it with you, and for you to share any solutions that may have worked for you. Let’s pool our mama knowledge and create a dialogue that may make a real difference in our lives and the lives of those around us who are suffering through morning sickness.

Please join us at the Xenia Public Library, 76 E. Dr. Blair Labig, DC, will be joining us to share his personal and professional reflections on the role of vaccinations for children. As medical consumers, we are protected by certain rights, but we can’t exercise them if we don’t know what they are. Come on out Monday night at 7 pm to find the answers to these questions and more:

My doctor says he induces everyone at 39 weeks. Do I have to be induced?

I want to have a VBAC but no one will accept me as a patient. What can I do?

I want to wear my own nightgown during labor but it’s against hospital policy. Do I have a choice?

During my last labor, they used Pitocin against my wishes, but I didn’t feel I had a choice. Did I?

Come join us at 7 pm, this Monday, October 13, 2008 at the Xenia Public Library, 76 E. Market Street. Our meetings are free and open to all. We’ll have a chance for you to ask questions and plenty of opportunity for learning and discussion. There will be yummy refreshments and titillating conversation!
Birth is a miracle, a rite of passage, a natural part of life. But birth is also big business.

Compelled to explore the subject after the delivery of her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to question the way American women have babies.

The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal.

Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency? First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Bethany Dykman, and I’ve been leading this group, along with Kelly, for the last year. I have a great interest in pregnancy and birth, especially natural birth, prenatal nutrition, midwifery, and home birth. Those are my personal areas of interest. I suppose the meetings tend to revolve a bit around those topics since they are what I know the most about, but I also like learning new things, so you’ll see topics that even I don’t know much about represented as well. I’m also a doula and a mother of 3, so I can offer information based on my experiences in those areas, as well.

As a group, we’ve been meeting for just over a year. The meetings are generally small, ranging from just 3 people to over 10. No matter the size, though, we always seem to have a good time and some interesting discussion. After all, it only takes getting 2 women together for there to be endless conversation, right? :) If you’re reading this now, and have never attended one of our meetings, I encourage you to drop by some time. We are friendly and love to meet new moms in the area. Whether pregnant now or quite some time ago, we all have stories to share, so please stop in and attend one of our meetings. We can’t wait to see you there!

Fathers During Pregnancy and Birth

We hope you can join us for the meeting of Dar a Luz Network in Xenia on Monday, June 9.
